Wayne White

ilovevia Waxy.org (via Kottke) comes the work of Wayne White, an artist who buys thrift shop paintings and adds his own three-dimensional text over the top of them to create a wholly new work of art.

Interesting stuff, and not without precedent: I am thinking in particular of Asger Jorn's Disfigured paintings from the early sixties (Jorn was a member of the Situationist International, one of whose key concepts was Detournement--the production of artistic expression through the deflection and subversion of meaning)--a concept revised and extended via the Culture-Jamming phenomena of the Nineties, wherein artists altered advertising billboards to create works of social commentary) as well as a couple of the British graffiti artist Banksy's canvases recently displayed in London.

twexus: pairs

Consisting of a large database of small photos, this website generates random pairings of images, many of which are very interesting.

Also, take a look at the symmetry section of Twexus--not quite as compelling as the pairing page, but still worthwhile...
