Cape Light
Joel Meyerowitz's photographs of Cape Cod (collected in the seminal book, Cape Light ) have long been personal touchstones for me. My own photographic explorations-- haphazard and amateurish as they certainly are-- have been profoundly shaped by his aesthetic: minimalist (though not in the calculated, art-movement sense of the word), informed with an almost fatalistic devotion to the capture of moment , deeply concerned with the methods by which light and color interact to produce a generative emotion. His seascapes, particularily, are works of great beauty whose value, at least to me, primarily lie in the way they attempt to simultaneously capture both the most ephemeral and omnipresent of natural phenomenon (the unfolding and dissipation of clouds, the play of light on ceaselessy moving water, the ebb and flow of individual moments whose asccretive significance is often only dimly noted in the short term, yet is constantly present and constantly adjusting the tenor of our own cognitive weather.
